We had a GREAT decorating class this year with 75 people rsvp'ing and 100 showing up!  It was standing room only and thanks to Harold and his crew it was a great class.

Remember we do this every year as a thank you gift to our customers, so if you missed it--no worries it' ll be back next year.  The class is held on a Saturday or Sunday in September or October.  You can always call and put yourself on the list for next year, it's never to early.

We tried something new this time, and scheduled our Department 56 Village signing with Scott Enter the same day.  Scott is the head designer for D56 and we love to host him at our store.  If you've never met him and had a village piece signed you're missing out.  He's a great guy and loves to talk to the customers about his villages.  Hearing how each piece was thought of and designed is a treat!

 Coming up next month on November 10th is our Christmas Open House with a signing by Jeff Byers from Byers' Choice Carolers! The signing is from 12-3, Open House is 10-6.  Put it on your calendar!  It's the first time for anyone from the Byers family to visit our store for a signing so we're excited. 

Our Christmas trees should be going up around the third week of October!  Who's ready?!

Skeleton in the freezer

We are notorious dumpster divers, and when Big Fish down the street put an old broken freezer out for the trash Harold's mind went crazy!  We have some Skeletons we ordered from Mark Roberts, some great glittered skull heads, a disposable cooler, cotton batting, and a D56 Blanket of New Fallen Snow along with other various ghouls.  It's super cool! (no pun intended) What do you think?  Fun right?

Our new Monster

Yesterday was the big day for our Halloween exterior and everything came together perfectly.  Dallas had a cold front blow through Friday night, and when the cherry picker arrived Saturday morning it was in the 70's. Much better than the 105 degrees the day before.

 

For those of you who have never visited our Grapevine, TX store, we are not newbies to big exteriors, but this is our first custom built display.  Harold has been building this for us out of styrofoam in his garage for some time now. It's heavy weight foam carved with hot wire, painted, secured with wood and screwed in to our new permanent wood anchor also installed yesterday. The face has old gym lights for eyes and red light bulbs.

Time was crucial because the cherry picker is expensive and we hate blocking our busy Main St., so the boys worked hard and by noon all pieces were on the roof and ready for mounting. We also put some grape garland and lights coming down from the fingers with a spider that arrived broken. (It was supposed to shake and didn't, so it was perfect for outside)

By 6pm the ladders were down and it was finished!  We did learn two important lessons today though:

1. Even grown men need mom to make them wear sunscreen.  Yes the Mexican one too.
2. ALWAYS plan exterior installs when Chuck is out of town at a football game :)

2012 Department 56 Village Display

I've FINALLY posted our 2012 Department 56 Village display....even though it's been up since the end of August or so.  Watch it all of the way through so you can see the awesome Peanuts Village display our designer Harold Hand has created for us.  It's an adorable Snoopy doghouse with the village inside.  Also the amazing Grinch tree that holds the Grinch village.  They are so creative and we are very proud.

You'll see a lot of sculpted styrofoam platforms and mountains.  We use medium weight styrofoam and use hot wire tools purchased at Hot Wire Foam Factory.  They have a web site, and are very easy to order.
